The poetry group is an informal, non-academic group for those who enjoy reading all kinds of poetry. Each month we choose a theme and members search the literature and bring in two or three poems which we read aloud and chat about. Alternatively we may choose a particular poet, or listen to poets reading their work aloud on the internet. This way we can share our tastes and discover new works; over the three years the group has been running we have all broadened our horizons considerably. Each month the poems chosen are printed out or sent out by e-mail so that each member can have a copy.
Subjects covered this year have been:- Winter, Courage, Journeys, the Family, Activities, Small Creatures, Friendship and Company, Solitude, and Beloved Women. We have also studied the life and poetry of Thomas Hardy and during the rest of the year will be listening to recordings of longer poems and dipping into our archives to rediscover old favourites.
The group meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month at 14 Gipsy Lane, at 10.30am for 11am. Membership is at present at its maximum of 10, though we are happy to take one or two names on a waiting list. There is a small charge of 50p per meeting.
